KÄTHE SCHÖNLE – Der wache Moment

Mit großer Freude darf ich die Veröffentlichung meiner ersten umfassenden Monographie mitteilen. Die Entwicklung und Gestaltung dieses Buches hat weit mehr Zeit in Anspruch genommen, als ich mir ursprünglich vorgestellt hatte – umso glücklicher bin ich über das Ergebnis. Dank der wunderbaren Zusammenarbeit mit den Autorinnen, dem Grafikstudio APT – A Passion Thing und dem VfmK VERLAG für moderne KUNST Wien ist ein wunderschönes Buch entstanden, auf das wir gemeinsam stolz sein können.

„KÄTHE SCHÖNLE – Der wache Moment“ erscheint im Juni 2026 im VfmK Verlag für moderne Kunst Wien. Die 256 Seiten umfassende Publikation mit zahlreichen Werk- und Ausstellungsabbildungen bietet einen umfassenden Einblick in meine künstlerische Arbeit in Malerei, Zeichnung, Collage und Siebdruck.

Mit Beiträgen von Lisa Ortner-Kreil, Aline Lara Rezende und Paula Watzl versammelt die Monographie unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf mein Werk und dessen zentrale Themen wie Identität, gesellschaftliche Transformation, Ambivalenz und Hoffnung.

I am delighted to announce the publication of my first comprehensive monograph. The development and design of this book took considerably more time than I had originally anticipated – which makes me all the happier with the result. Thanks to the wonderful collaboration with the contributing authors, the graphic design studio APT – A Passion Thing, and VfmK VERLAG für moderne KUNST Vienna, a beautiful publication has been created, one we can all be proud of.

“KÄTHE SCHÖNLE – Der wache Moment” will be published in June 2026 by VfmK Verlag für moderne Kunst Vienna. The 256-page volume, featuring numerous images of works and exhibitions, offers an extensive insight into my artistic practice in painting, drawing, collage, and screen printing.

With contributions by Lisa Ortner-Kreil, Aline Lara Rezende, and Paula Watzl, the monograph brings together different perspectives on my work and its central themes, including identity, social transformation, ambiguity, and hope.

Die Ausstellung Dancing Together – Between Gesture and Projection zeigt Arbeiten der in Wien lebenden Künstlerinnen Donya Aalipour und Käthe Schönle und untersucht Spielräume des Handelns von Individuum und Gesellschaft im Spannungsfeld von Gegenwart und Zukunft.

Die im Iran geborene und aufgewachsene Künstlerin Donya Aalipour zeigt malerische Arbeiten sowie erstmals eine Videoinstallation. Ausgangspunkt ist dokumentarisches Bildmaterial aus dem Iran, das Menschen beim Tanzen auf Begräbnissen zeigt – Gesten, die sich innerhalb eines repressiven Systems formieren und sich zugleich dessen Kontrolle entziehen. Aalipour überführt dieses Material in Malerei, als auch in Form einer Installation in eine vielschichtige visuelle Struktur, in der Malerei, Film und eine eigens für die Arbeit komponierte Musik von Armin Sanayei miteinander verschränkt werden. Bewegung erscheint hier als minimale und zugleich existenzielle Form von Handlung, Widerstand und Ermächtigung des Individuums gegen ein Regime.

Käthe Schönle zeigt in der Ausseinandersetzung mit der menschlichen Existenz und möglichen Handlungsräumen eine auf die Zukunft gerichtete Perspektive. Während ihre künstlerische Praxis häufig von einer reduzierten Figuration ausgeht – sichtbar auch in kleinformatigen Arbeiten, die die Ausstellung ergänzen – entwickelt sie in ihrer aktuellen Werkserie „Solarpunk“ eine deutlich stärker visuell geprägte, abstrakte Bildsprache. Der menschliche Körper scheint weiterhin präsent, jedoch weniger als Abbildung denn als Referenz. Schönles Malerei formuliert Bildräume, die auf die Vorstellung alternativer Zukünfte zielen, und versteht Imagination als Voraussetzung für gesellschaftliche Transformation – zwischen Fragilität und konstruktivem Optimismus.

Im Dialog eröffnen beide Positionen ein Spannungsfeld zwischen unmittelbarer Geste und spekulativem Entwurf. Die Ausstellung versteht Bewegung sowohl als körperlichen Akt als auch als Denkfigur: als etwas, das unter restriktiven Bedingungen entsteht und zugleich auf das Mögliche gerichtet ist. Dancing Together – Between Gesture and Projection fragt damit nach den Voraussetzungen von Handlung, nach den Möglichkeiten von Individuum, Gruppe, Gesellschaft – und nach der Rolle von Bildern in der Hervorbringung von Gegenwart und Zukunft.

Dancing Together – Between Gesture and Projection

The exhibition Dancing Together – Between Gesture and Projection presents works by the Vienna-based artists Donya Aalipour and Käthe Schönle, exploring spaces of agency for both the individual and society within the tension between present and future.

Born and raised in Iran, Donya Aalipour presents paintings alongside a video installation shown for the first time. The point of departure is documentary footage from Iran depicting people dancing at funerals—gestures that emerge within a repressive system while simultaneously eluding its control. Aalipour translates this material into painting as well as into an installation that unfolds as a multilayered visual structure, interweaving painting, film, and an original musical composition by Armin Sanayei. Here, movement appears as both a minimal and existential form of action, resistance, and individual empowerment in the face of an authoritarian regime.

In her engagement with human existence and possible spaces of action, Käthe Schönle develops a perspective oriented toward the future. While her artistic practice often departs from a reduced figuration—also visible in the small-format works accompanying the exhibition—her current series Solarpunk evolves a markedly more visually driven and abstract painterly language. The human body remains perceptible, though less as representation than as reference. Schönle’s paintings articulate pictorial spaces directed toward the imagination of alternative futures, understanding imagination itself as a prerequisite for social transformation—positioned between fragility and constructive optimism.

In dialogue, both artistic positions open up a field of tension between immediate gesture and speculative projection. The exhibition understands movement both as a bodily act and as a conceptual figure: as something that emerges under restrictive conditions while simultaneously orienting itself toward the possible.

Dancing Together – Between Gesture and Projection thus asks about the conditions of agency, the possibilities of the individual, the group, and society—and about the role of images in shaping both present and future.

Die in österreichischen Kulturforen weltweit präsentierte Ausstellungsserie Why „We Should All Be Feminists“ nutzt Kunst, um für Geschlechtergerechtigkeit, Menschenrechte und den Abbau von tradierten Rollenbildern zu plädieren. Sie unterstreicht die Notwendigkeit, strukturelle Ungleichheit zu bekämpfen und die Gleichstellung als essenzielles Ziel zu verankern, um die Position der Frau in der Gesellschaft zu stärken und eine gerechtere Welt für alle zu fördern. Der Titel der Ausstellung basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Essay von Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, der für eine zeitgemäße Definition von Feminismus plädiert.

„Feminism, what else?“ Eine Ausstellung von Kunst, geschaffen von Frauen, generations-und kultur-übergreifend. Zu sehen sind Arbeiten von Ikonen der feministischen Avantgarde wie Renate Bertlmann, Florentina Pakosta, Stella Bach und Margot Pilz und ebenso von jungen Künstlerinnen, die mit eigener Ästhetik Identität und Beziehungen reflektieren und einen Sinn für Stärke, Selbstbewusstsein und Schönheit transportieren. Gezeigt werden Positionen von: Donya Aalipour, Ina Ebenberger, Tanja Prušnik, Beáta Hechtova, Bianca Ion, Käthe Schönle, Linda Steiner, Julia Woronowicz. Ebenso von Louise Deininger, Starsky und Afrikas Shooting Star Zandile Tshabalala.

Feminismus, was sonst? Es geht eben nicht um eine reine Frauenangelegenheit. Jeder, der für Menschenwürde und Menschenrechte eintritt, gehört dazu. „Feminismus ist eine Bewegung, die Sexismus, sexistische Ausbeutung und Unterdrückung beenden will“. Mit diesem schlichten Satz brachte die schwarze US-Amerikanische Feministin Bell Hooks auf den Punkt, worum es geht. 

Es geht um Unterdrückung. Um die Strukturen, in denen Unterdrückung sich erhält. Gewalt gegen Frauen – physische und digitale – ist Alltag. In zunehmendem Maße. Einher geht die schreckliche Entwicklung mit dem fortschreitenden Erstarken von autokratischen Bewegungen und Regimen. Getragen werden die von Männern, die – bedacht auf eigene Vorteile und Vorherrschaft – Demokratie, Menschenrechte und Menschenwürde zunehmend außer Kraft setzen. Es geht ihnen um persönliche Macht. So festigen und erweitern sie patriarchalische Strukturen, verfolgen egozentrisch und ohne jede Empathie ihre Ambitionen. Jeden Akt von Mitgefühl und Solidarität werten sie als Angriff auf sich und die Freiheit überhaupt.

Zu beklagen sind Besitzansprüche auf Frauen, ihre Körper und immer wieder widerliche Gewalt und Unterwerfung. Doch die Auflehnung muss weitergehen, gegen die Strukturen der Dominanz und Entrechtung. Feminismus gehört zum Widerstand – ebenso wie der Kampf gegen Rassismus und Neo-Kolonialismus, Musk-Kapitalismus und Trumpismus und alle Bewegungen gegen jede Form der Unterdrückung. Was sonst?

Feminism – what else?

“Feminism, what else?” An exhibition of art created by women, across generations and cultures. On view are works by icons of the feminist avant-garde such as Renate Bertlmann, Florentina Pakosta, Stella Bach and Margot Pilz, as well as by young artists who reflect on identity and relationships through their own aesthetics and convey a sense of strength, self-confidence, and beauty. Positions by: Donya Aalipour, Ina Ebenberger, Tanja Prušnik, Beáta Hechtova, Bianca Ion, Käthe Schönle, Linda Steiner, Julia Woronowicz. Also by Louise Deininger, starsky and Africa’s shooting star Zandile Tshabalala.

Feminism, what else? It is precisely not a purely women’s issue. Everyone who stands up for human dignity and human rights belongs to it. “Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” With this simple sentence, the Black American feminist bell hooks summed up what it is about.

It is about oppression. About the structures in which oppression sustains itself. Violence against women—physical and digital—is part of everyday life. Increasingly so. This terrible development goes hand in hand with the continuing rise of autocratic movements and regimes. They are carried by men who—intent on their own advantage and supremacy—increasingly suspend democracy, human rights, and human dignity. What they seek is personal power. In this way they consolidate and expand patriarchal structures, pursuing their ambitions egocentrically and without any empathy. They interpret every act of compassion and solidarity as an attack on themselves and on freedom itself.

What must be lamented are claims of ownership over women, their bodies, and again and again disgusting violence and subjugation. Yet the resistance must continue, against the structures of dominance and disenfranchisement. Feminism belongs to resistance—as does the struggle against racism and neo-colonialism, Musk capitalism and Trumpism, and all movements against every form of oppression. What else?

„House of Awe“ ist ein Ausstellungsprojekt mit Werken von Olga Titus und Käthe Schönle, kuratiert von Paula Marschalek. Als Special Artist Guest ist Birgit Graschopf eingeladen.

Die Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, Spannungsfelder zwischen Nähe und Fremdheit, Schutz und Begrenzung, Tradition und Transformation zu erkunden – und die Kraft künstlerischer Zusammenarbeit erlebbar zu machen. Der Begriff „Haus“ dient dabei als Leitmotiv: gedankliche wie physische Räume entstehen, die Geborgenheit, Sicherheit, Zuflucht und Erinnerung thematisieren, gleichzeitig aber auch von Brüchen und ambivalenten Bedeutungen erzählen.

Die Künstlerinnen bündeln ihre Kräfte, um kollaborativ neue Arbeiten zu entwickeln, die sie im Sinne eines Gesamtkunstwerkes präsentieren. Dabei hinterfragen sie auf spielerische, kritische Weise künstlerische Produktion und Präsentation. Es treffen unterschiedliche Arbeitsweisen und Ansätze aufeinander, analog wie digital. Dabei überschneiden sich Fragen nach Identität, Frau- und Menschsein, die Auseinandersetzung mit sozialen und kulturellen Strukturen steht im Zentrum.

House of Awe is an exhibition project featuring works by Olga Titus and Käthe Schönle, curated by Paula Marschalek. Birgit Graschopf has been invited as a special guest artist.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore the tensions between closeness and strangeness, protection and limitation, tradition and transformation – and to experience the power of artistic collaboration. The concept of ‘house’ serves as main idea: mental and physical spaces are created that deal with thoughts about safety, refuge and memory, while also visualizing ruptures and ambivalent meanings.

The artists join forces to collaboratively develop new works, which they present as a Gesamtkunstwerk. In doing so, they question artistic production and presentation in a playful and also critical way. Different working methods and approaches come together, both analogue and digital. Questions of identity, womanhood and humanity overlap, with the focus on the examination of social and cultural structures.

Structures give us stability and orientation. However, structures can also restrict and limit us, blocking development and freedom. Emotions tell us what is important to us and give us the energy to strive for it – and to use structures or break out of them in the process. It is precisely this positioning that the artists are concerned with in the works for this exhibition.

For them – and for the viewer – non-representational art opens up tensions, perception and experience detached from habitual thinking in fixed categories. In this way, it opens up spaces for new sensory experience and reflection.

Nina Gospodin’s works are characterised by the modular use of templates that are constantly transformed into new constellations and figurations. This enables the realisation of paradoxes – of continuums, connections with opposing poles that cannot be resolved, but between which different positionings and thus states are possible.

In her colourful works, Zhanina Marinova explores perceptions, thoughts and feelings that fundamentally and mostly unconsciously determine human existence. In doing so, she also imaginatively invents her own reality and consciously enters into paradoxes into which life repeatedly drives us without reflection. In her works, she balances between knowledge and vision, planning and chance, control and intuition – without tipping to one side or the other.

Colour and ‘loose’ geometry are at the heart of JC Bright’s art. He makes colour the entry point of his work, ‘with the hope that they will be perceived before anything else.’ Using primary colours as the basis for his vibrant abstract paintings, he explores themes such as tradition, cultural heritage, family relationships, lived experiences and indigenous values.

For Käthe Schönle, non-representational paintings are visualisations of inner states. They emerge from the confrontation with external circumstances. The pictures depict relationships. They are a dynamic dialogue between colours and layers, forms and lines, edges and empty spaces. Without an obvious anchor in the figurative world.

‘Structures and Emotions’ invites you to immerse yourself in transcendental experience – which, as Kant argued, makes the realisation of experience possible. Non-representational images are, as Gerhard Richter puts it, ‘fictitious models, because they visualise a reality that we can neither see nor describe, but whose existence we can infer.’

Der Kamp, an dessen Ufern diese Ausstellung stattfindet, ist als Fluss zum Leitgedanken für die installative Präsentation von Käthe Schönles teils abstrakten und teils gegenständlichen Arbeiten geworden. Das identifikationsstiftende Naturdenkmal ‚Fluss‘ ist Lebensquelle und kann zugleich, durch sein bewegtes, sich stetig veränderndes Wesen, zum bedrohlichen Gewässer werden. Nicht nur der Fluss, sondern auch unser Leben, wie auch Gesellschaft undPolitik sind einem stetigen Wandel unterworfen. So beschreibt schon der griechische Philosoph Heraklit „die einzige Konstante im Universum ist die Veränderung“. Käthe Schönles Bilder sind ‚im fluss‘, ufern über die Bildkanten aus und laden zum vertiefenden Betrachten ein. Ihre bewegten Bilder sind berührend und ein Appell für einen respektvollen Umgang mit Mensch und Natur. 

Die Ausstellung zeigt rund 25 Arbeiten aus Malerei, Zeichnung und Siebdruck. Das Triptychon „Fluss“ (420 x 160cm) wurde speziell für die Ausstellung entwickelt.

Käthe Schönle beschäftigt sich malend, zeichnend und collagierend mit dem Thema der menschlichen Interaktion. In ihren zumeist farbintensiven, teilweise gegenständlichen, teilweise abstrakten Arbeiten, webt sie alltägliche Erfahrungen und Erkenntnisse aus dem Makro- wie auch dem Mikrokosmos ineinander. Geschehnisse und Zustände aus Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft aber auch Partnerschaft und Familie transformiert sie in visuellen Ausdruck und setzt diesen auf Leinwand oder Papier. Oft anrührend, verzaubernd, wachrüttelnd und aus der Seele sprechend sind Käthe Schönles Arbeiten ein Appell für den bewussten und respektvollen Umgang mit Mensch und Ressourcen. (Lisa Ortner-Kreil)

Art is a meeting zone. Whether sewing machine and umbrella meet on the dissecting table, Nanas cavort in the Tuscan garden or a painting is viewed by a person. This exhibition brings together the works of three artists and the various ways of reading and interpreting them. In the contact between the different artworks and their cosmos, there is room for new chains of association. In this structure, every line, every fold is a shared space of possibility - a shared space.

Kunst ist eine Begegnungszone. Ob da nun Nähmaschine und Regenschirm auf dem Seziertisch aufeinandertreffen, Nanas sich im toskanischen Garten tummeln, oder ein Gemälde von einer Person betrachtet wird. In dieser Ausstellung begegnen sich die Werke dreier Künstler:innen, und die damit einhergehenden diversen Les- und Deutungsweisen. In den Berührungen der unterschiedlichen Kunstwerke und deren Kosmen ist Raum für neue Assoziationsketten. In diesem Gefüge ist jede Linie, jede Falte ein gemeinsamer Möglichkeitsraum – ein Shared Space.

Die Ausstellung in der VBKÖ greift demnach “The Portal” aus unterschiedlichen

Gesichtspunkten auf und präsentiert künstlerische Beiträge, die sich kritisch mit dem Portal in

dessen vielfältigen Bedeutungen auseinandersetzen. So geht es zum Beispiel um die eigene

Geschichte der VBKÖ, die 1910 gegründet wurde, um Künstlerinnen* zu fördern und für die

Verbesserung ihrer künstlerischen, wirtschaftlichen und bildungspolitischen Bedingungen in

einer Zeit einzutreten, in der Institutionen wie die Secession, das Künstlerhaus und die

Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien ausschließlich für Männer zugänglich waren. Zu den

ersten Errungenschaften der Vereinigung gehörte daher der erfolgreiche Kampf um den

Zugang von Frauen* an die Akademie und vor allem der Einsatz dafür, dass Künstlerinnen*

einen eigenen Raum für ihre Arbeiten erhielten. Die VBKÖ gehört damit zu den ersten von

Frauen* geführten Kunsträumen der Welt, die ihre Türen für Künstlerinnen* öffneten, die sonst

aus den hiesigen Kunstszenen ignoriert wurden. Auch heute noch bietet die VBKÖ einen Raum

für Experimente sowie politische und aktivistische Arbeit, um eine neue, lebendige Verbindung

zwischen historischem Engagement und zeitgenössischer, queerer, feministischer

Kunstproduktion zu schaffen. Zum ersten Mal in ihrer Geschichte setzt sich der

VBKÖ-Vorstand 2021 aus vier starken Künstlerinnen* of Color zusammen.

Eine zentrale Frage lautet demnach: Warum sind Türen für die einen offen und für andere

geschlossen? In diesem Kontext fragt die Ausstellung daher auch: Warum können manche

Menschen eine Grenze überschreiten, die für andere lebensbedrohlich wäre? Wie schafft die

Politik Barrieren und wie können wir sie abbauen? Und noch akuter: Ist die Pandemie ein

Portal, wie Arundhati Roy schrieb: "Historisch gesehen haben Pandemien die Menschen

gezwungen, mit der Vergangenheit zu brechen und sich ihre Welt neu vorzustellen. Das ist bei

dieser Pandemie nicht anders. Sie ist ein Portal, ein Durchgang zwischen einer Welt und der

nächsten. Wir können uns entscheiden, hindurchzugehen und die Kadaver unserer Vorurteile

und unseres Hasses, unseres Geizes, unserer Datenbanken und toten Ideen, unserer toten

Flüsse und rauchigen Himmel hinter uns herzuschleppen. Oder wir können mit leichtem

Gepäck hindurchgehen, bereit, uns eine andere Welt vorzustellen. Und bereit, dafür zu

kämpfen."

The iconic portal in the Maysedergasse is the only remaining eyewitness to the history of

VBKÖ, existing since 1910 as entrance to its exhibition spaces and archive. We define this

golden door not only as a doorway but also as a starting point, threshold, wormhole, as an

escape route, border or opening; it can stand for new beginnings, time travel, change, access,

passage, progress, gatekeeping, transition; it can be the portal to different realities and worlds;

it guards who gets in and out; and, ultimately, it can mean transformation or the end.

The exhibition at the VBKÖ thus tackles "The Portal" from various perspectives and presents

artistic contributions that critically examine the theme in its manyfold meanings. In the context

of the VBKÖ's own history, for example, the association was founded in 1910 to promote female

artists and to advocate for the improvement of their artistic, economic and educational

conditions at a time when institutions such as the Secession, the Künstlerhaus and the

Academy of Fine Arts Vienna were exclusively open to men. Among the VBKÖ's first

achievements was therefore its successful advocacy for women*'s admission to the Academy

of Fine Arts Vienna and, first and foremost, to give women* artists their own space to exhibit.

The VBKÖ is thus among the earliest women*-run art spaces in the world to open its doors to

artists that were shunned otherwise. Today, the VBKÖ still provides a space for

experimentation as well as political and activist work to create a new, vibrant connection

between historical engagement and contemporary, queer, feminist art production. For the first

time in its history, the 2021 VBKÖ Board is composed of four strong women* artists of color.

A central question of the exhibition therefore is: Why are doors open for some and closed for

others? In a more broader context, the show also asks: Why can some people cross a border

that would be life-threatening for others? How do politics create barriers and how do we break

them down? And more acutely, is the pandemic a portal, as Arundhati Roy wrote: "Historically,

pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one

is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk

through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and

dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with

little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it."
